As far as memory goes, my life began rummaging through hills and orchards in a less-developed California. “The smell of a fireplace and that of the earth were all we knew to want.” As a child, I was fascinated with words and how they felt and sounded rolling off my tongue, and would insist my parents listen to “rhyming things” composed in my mind. Through all the milestones of life, journeys imagined and taken, “cyclones and gravity,” this music of words and the mystery of creation have continued to pursue me. I am first a poor but earnest servant of Christ, then a servant of words.
